What Happened to My Medication Schedules?

Has the below scenario ever happened to you?

You verify an order received from order entry in NextGen® Inpatient Clinicals or enter a new order in NextGen® Pharmacy. However, after the order is verified in pharmacy, the administration schedules for the medications do not appear in the medication administration record (eMAR or BCMA) in NextGen Inpatient Clinicals.

Well, what happened? For medication schedules to display correctly, the SIG codes in NextGen Inpatient Clinicals and Pharmacy must be in sync. You must have each SIG code built properly and defined in both applications.

If this has happened to you, make sure the SIG code that was used in the order is listed in both modules with the recommended setup. Then, simply discontinue the original order and enter a new order.

*Note: All SIG codes in NextGen Pharmacy require the following:

  • SIG codes must be populated and match the codes in NextGen Inpatient Clinicals
  • Patient/Nurse instructions must be populated
  • Frequency must be populated for SIG codes without assigned times
  • Daily Dose Schedule must be populated for SIG codes with assigned times and must match frequency times in NextGen Inpatient Clinicals
  • Frequency cannot be populated when daily dose schedules are assigned to a SIG code
  • ‘Given On the Following Days’ must be populated for every SIG code. This field must match ‘Days to Perform’ in NextGen Inpatient Clinicals

*Note: All SIG codes (aka Frequency) in NextGen Inpatient Clinicals require the following:

  • Order Type must be populated
  • Codes must be populated and match the SIG codes in Pharmacy
  • Display Code must be populated
  • Description is optional, but helpful if provided
  • Interval must be populated (in minutes) for SIG codes without assigned times
  • Frequency Times must be populated for SIG codes with assigned times and match the daily dose schedule in NextGen Pharmacy ‘Days to Perform’ must be populated for every SIG code
