OIG Targets POS Coding

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) found that between 2010 and 2012, nearly $33.4 million was received by physicians when an incorrect code for place of service (POS) was used. Incorrect POS coding usually happens when a physician’s office uses a non-facility POS code for services provided in a facility.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the OIG are working to put together a plan for data matches of non-facility coded physician services and facility claims to identify physician services that are a high risk for POS miscoding and recover overpayments.
