New Q Code

Starting July 1, 2015, providers can start reporting the new Q code Q9977  – Compound drug, not otherwise classified), for all unclassified compound drugs. The new Q9977 code means you will have one code to report for any drug that fits the definition of a compound drug and does not already have a unique HCPCS code.

Currently, providers select codes for unclassified compound drugs based on the type of drug being used, typically these J codes:

J3490 – unclassified drugs

  • J3590 – Unclassified biologics
  • J7799 – Not otherwise classified drugs, other than inhalation drugs, administered through DME
  • J9999 – Not otherwise classified antineoplastic drug

Private payers may take a little longer to implement the Q code. If a J code the provider currently uses is denied, the payer may want the Q code used.
