All legacy names for bunionectomy (e.g., Keller, McBride, and Mayo) has been eliminated so the code descriptions are clearer.
Two new codes have been created for bunionectomy procedures, three codes have been deleted, and six have been revised.
Revised – 28289: clarifies it is without implant
- New – 28291: for hallux rigidus correction with cheilectomy, and first metatarsophalangeal joint implant
- Revised – 28292: clarifies this includes excision of the proximal phalanx base, if performed
- Revised – 28296: clarifies the correction requires a distal metatarsal osteotomy
- New – 28295: for proximal metatarsal osteotomy
- Revised – 28297: clarifies this procedure requires first metatarsal and medial cuneiform joint arthrodesis
- Revised – 28298: clarifies this requires osteotomy of the proximal phalanx
- Revised – 28299: clarifies this is with double osteotomy, any method
Codes 28290, 28293, and 28294 have been deleted.
