A Reminder About NextGen® Direct Messaging & ONC Certification

NextGen Healthcare strives to keep our clients updated on important regulatory issues. For this reason, we urge you to read this important reminder regarding 2023 certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT) requirements and deadlines.

As detailed in the 2020 Interoperability and Information Blocking interim final rule, December 31, 2022 will be the last day that the ONC 2015 Edition certification will be considered valid for participation in Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) quality programs. After this date, only technology certified to the ONC’s 2015 Edition Cures Update will be considered certified.

If your organization uses a version of NextGen® Direct Messaging (not to be confused with NextGen® Share Direct Messaging) lower than version 2.13, please be aware that 2.13 is the minimum version designated as 2015 Edition Cures Update CEHRT by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC). For more information about our ONC certification you can visit the ONC Certified Health IT Product Listing (CHPL).

To the extent that your end users may rely upon the NextGen Direct Messaging certification for participation in quality programs requiring the use of CEHRT (specifically, the CMS Quality Payment Program), we urge you to upgrade to the current version before January 1, 2023.

In addition to Cures Update certification, the latest release of NextGen Direct Messaging includes several enhancements and improvements, including:

  • 360X Transaction Support
  • KANA 2.3.1 for Direct Messaging
  • Message Pruning (2.14)
  • Log4j update to use 2.17.0
  • Known Issue resolution

Upgrades may be self-installed, or you may open a Support case to have our team assist you. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your account representative.
