As NextGen Healthcare has previously communicated, the “unverified lab results setting” in all Rosetta instances shall remain unchecked, i.e., labs results will not be included in any C-CDA generated unless the labs have been signed off.
This has been a topic of great interest, as the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) in its final information blocking rule and subsequently published frequently asked questions (FAQs) has indicated that electronic health information (EHI) including lab results should essentially be available to patients and other authorized parties upon request, regardless of whether that EHI has been reviewed and/or signed by the healthcare provider.
Consistent with this ONC guidance, NextGen Healthcare initially intended to change the default setting to checked so that lab results would be available in the C-CDA without review.
However, NextGen Healthcare decided to remove this change from software updates in light of potential conflicts between the federal information blocking regulations and various state laws governing the release of lab results that would override the federal regulations.
This decision impacts all instances of Rosetta, including those related to:
- NextGen® Share (Direct Messaging and Carequality)
- NextGen® Connect Interface Engine (interfaces to HIEs)
- NextGen® Patient Portal and NextGen® PxP Patient Portal
For NextGen® Share – clients wishing to change the default setting to include unverified (i.e., unsigned) results in C-CDA for NextGen® Share should open a support case as follows:
- Category: Interoperability
- Topic: NextGen Share
- Be sure to specify whether you are requesting this change for: (i) Direct Messaging, (ii) Carequality or (iii) both services.
For all other instances of Rosetta – we recommend clients open a support case. (Note: Self-hosted clients who are familiar with the Rosetta CDA console can make this change if they would like, but Support is available to assist.)

PLEASE NOTE: NextGen Healthcare strongly recommends that you consult with your legal/regulatory compliance teams to determine whether this default setting change should be implemented by your practice.
