Selecting a Chart Co-Signer in Emergency Department

After completing patient documentation, a Mid-Level Provider (such as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner) will often be required to have a provider sign off on the documentation. Beginning in NextGen® Emergency Department (NGE) version 6.0.18, the Mid-Level provider will be able to select an attending provider.

If the facility configuration requires mid-level providers to have co-signatures, mid-level users must now select which attending provider will cosign a patient’s chart. To indicate which provider should cosign a patient’s chart, follow these steps:

  • As a mid-level provider, complete final impressions and disposition for the patient.
  • Click the Mark the Patient’s Chart as Final icon. HS_NGE_1
  • Select the name from the drop-down menu of the medical director or supervisor who will cosign. The names of all attending providers are listed in the drop-down.

  • Ensure Add chart for co-signature is selected.
  • Click Save/Close.

After the patient’s chart is saved, the Co-Signature field at the bottom of the selected co-signer’s status board will indicate there is a chart that requires a co-signature. Clicking on the Co-Signature field takes the provider to a screen that lists all of the charts currently requiring the co-signer’s signature.
