FAQ: What is the difference in letters/numbers when registering a patient for the portal in NextGen Inpatient Clinicals?

-How do can you tell the difference between 0 and O when a patient attempts to log into the NextGen® Patient Portal?

When a patient is originally registered for the patient portal, via the NextGen® Inpatient Clinicals module, a temporary username, password, and security question are displayed. This page should be printed out, given to the patient and the patient should be encouraged to log into the portal.

While the username is normally recognizable (normally a variation of the patient’s first and last name), the temporary password and security question answer will consist of a string of letters and numbers. To help the user more easily enter their temporary information, the letter “o” will NOT be capitalized, like all the other letters. When the user views “O”, they should enter the number (zero).

This is important to note because capitalization is taken into account when entering the user name, password and security question information. For example, a password of “ABC1234” will not be accepted, if the system is expecting “abc1234”. Be sure to instruct your patients to enter their information exactly as it appears on the printed sheet, whether it’s the little letter “o” or the number zero (0).
