As of the December 3, 2014 The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) allows denial of enrollment for providers who previously owned a business that accumulated Medicare debt during their tenures or within one year of leaving. CMS can deny enrollment if it believes that the debt poses a risk of fraud, waste or abuse. Providers can avoid enrollment denial by paying off old debt or arranging a payment plan with CMS.
