As the first COVID-19 vaccines begin reaching the market, Health IT vendors like NextGen Healthcare have a critical role to play in tracking and reporting vaccine administration. As part of its “Operation Warp Speed” initiative, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has already engaged NextGen Healthcare and our industry colleagues to coordinate efforts.
Current Status for NextGen Enterprise
- We have received new vaccine and administration codes from our partner First Data Bank, which will be made available to our clients, along with instructions for setting up and using these codes in your software.
- Since these vaccines are the first of their kind, there are open questions about administration and reporting requirements. Once we receive answers to these questions, we will commence any necessary development work.

NextGen Healthcare is committed to supporting clients and delivering updates in an expedited manner. We ask that you bookmark the COVID-19 Resources page on Success Community and check back frequently, in addition to watching for future announcements like this one.
A COVID-19 Vaccine Resource page is now available on the Success Community. This page includes a white paper with FAQs including these highlighted below:
Q: How will clients receive and set up codes for the vaccines and administration?
A: The NextGen® Enterprise December Medication Update includes the necessary code set values for the two vaccines (from Pfizer and Moderna) receiving Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA before the end of the year. Once clients have applied the December Medication Update, the process of adding the vaccine to inventory, ordering, and documenting administration of the vaccine are the same as for other vaccines. Visit Most Recent Ancillary Releases and Medical Updates to view the latest updates.
Q: How will clients report these immunizations to the appropriate registry?
A: Based on guidance we have received thus far, practices administering COVID-19 vaccines should continue to report vaccine administration information to current state immunization registries. If clients anticipate receiving and administering COVID-19 vaccines but do not have an active interface to their state/regional immunization registry, they should reach out to their sales representative to request one as soon as possible.
