COVID-19 and NextGen Office

As the first COVID-19 vaccines begin reaching the market, Health IT vendors like NextGen Healthcare have a critical role to play in tracking and reporting vaccine administration. As part of its “Operation Warp Speed” initiative, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has already engaged NextGen Healthcare and our industry colleagues to coordinate efforts.

Current Status for NextGen® Office

Stay Updated

NextGen Healthcare is committed to supporting clients and delivering updates in an expedited manner. Since these vaccines are the first of their kind, there are open questions about administration and reporting requirements. We will keep you updated as new information becomes available.

Below are the most recent COVID-19 FAQs:

Q: When will COVID-19 vaccines be available in the Immunization module?

A: The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines are currently available. Any other vaccines will be available once they receive FDA approval.

Q: Are the COVID-19 vaccines available in the NextGen® Office Patient Portal?

A: No, patients are not able to enter the vaccine in their own Patient Portal accounts. They can obtain the information from other sources, such as from the administering provider’s office.

Q: What are NextGen Healthcare’s Best Practice recommendations for tracking patients for the second dose?

A: Our first recommendation to document that the patient received the COVID-19 vaccine is to use Vaccine Log within Vaccine Inventory from within the encounter. Immunizations documented using the New Immunization workflow will not show up on the Vaccine Log. Our second recommendation is to create a Custom Report in My Reports using the Procedures Billed filter. Enter the CPT code for the COVID-19 vaccine that was administered to the patient.
