Complying with the Surprise Billing Final Rule and Good Faith Estimates Requirement

On September 30, 2021, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Department of Labor, and the Department of the Treasury released an interim final rule with comment period, entitled “Requirements Related to Surprise Billing; Part II.” This rule implements protections against surprise medical bills under the No Surprises Act, signed into law on December 27, 2020.

The interim rule requires providers to issue good faith estimates (GFEs) to uninsured or self-pay patients upon request or upon scheduling services.
