CMS Applies Automatic Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances Policy to all Individual Clinicians!

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced an Automatic Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances Policy to all Individual Clinicians (ECs) required to participate in Medicare’s Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) for the 2020 performance period.

CMS will identify individual MIPS ECs and automatically apply the Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances for the 2020 Performance Year. The EC’s MIPS score will reflect reweighting to 0% for all performance categories not already submitted. (This automatic exception will not apply to MIPS ECs who have already submitted two or more performance categories. Previous 2020 submissions will not be overwritten and will be scored.)

Note: The Automatic Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances Policy does not apply to Groups, Virtual Groups or APM’s.
