The deadline in New York State for electronically prescribing all prescription medications (including controlled substances) was March 27, 2016. Under the auspices of its I-STOP program, the state of New York is requiring that all exceptions must be recorded when prescriptions are provided in some other manner (printed, paper, or fax) and providers must have the ability to report this information to the state on demand.
To assist clients in meeting this requirement, a custom New York I-STOP Audit Report has been posted to Success Community (download report and see this document on how to use the report).
NextGen Healthcare urges clients to document e-prescribing exceptions in the medications module as follows:
- Select a New or existing encounter.
- Select Medications.
- Select Prescribe New and select the medication.
- Select Add Note.
- Select “Prescribe” as the Note Type.
- Enter the reason for not e-prescribing.
- Select OK.
Note: If your organization has a residency program, an institutional DEA number is required for residents writing prescriptions for controlled substances. A hot fix for this is scheduled for release this week and will also be found on Success Community.
If you have not previously set up e-prescribing for controlled substances, this guide can assist you in that process.
