On Friday, April 10, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a new notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) for changes to the EHR Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs in 2015 through 2017.
This proposed rule would “align Stage 1 and Stage 2 objectives and measures with the long-term proposals for Stage 3” which CMS released three weeks ago.
Proposed Changes for EHR Incentive Programs:
- Significantly, the new rule proposes a change in the meaningful use reporting period from one year to 90 days in 2015 for all providers, regardless of their scheduled stage.
- Along with the Stage 3 NPRM, the proposed rules align the rules, objectives and stages of meaningful use requirements by “removing redundant, duplicative, and topped-out measures” and providing some relief for others, such as Stage 2 patient engagement objectives.
