2019 MIPS Performance Year Begins–Full year for MIPS Quality and Cost

On January 1, the full-year 2019 performance year began for the Merit Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) under Medicare’s Quality Payment Program.

While the MIPS Promoting Interoperability performance period remains 90 days for 2019and the for seeable future, the performance period for MIPS Quality and MIPS Cost remains a full year and has officially begun.

In 2019, Quality and Cost for will account for 45% and 15% of an eligible clinician’s or group’s overall MIPS score, respectively. (The categories were worth 50% and 10% in 2018, respectively).

MIPS Quality–As in 2018, eligible clinicians must submit data for at least 6 measures for a 12-month performance period. One of these measures must be an outcome measure, or a high priority measure if the clinician or practice has no applicable outcome measure to report

MIPS Promoting Interoperability-As in 2018, the MIPS Promoting Interoperability (formerly “advancing care information”) category will account for 25% a clinician’s or group’s overall MIPS score. NextGen® Enterprise clients should open a support case to set up the 2019 MIPS PI program in NextGen® HQM as soon as it is released in order to begin trending performance and select their best 90 days at the end of the year.

MIPS Improvement Activities–As in 2018, the MIPS Improvement Activities category will have a 90-day performance period 2019 15% of a clinician’s or group’s overall MIPS score. Your organization can report the same activities as last year, however, there have been some minor changes to the list of available activities.

MIPS Cost will be calculated by CMS based on a full-year of claims data in 2019.
