2017 Coding Changes: Pelvic Ring Fracture

CPT codes 27193 and 27194 have been deleted and replaced with codes 27197 and 27198.

The new codes clarify that it is for posterior pelvic ring fracture(s).

27197 – Closed treatment of posterior pelvic ring fracture(s), dislocation(s), diastasis or subluxation of the ilium, sacroiliac joint, and/or sacrum, with or without anterior pelvic ring fracture(s) and/or dislocation(s) of the pubic symphysis and/or superior/inferior rami, unilateral or bilateral; without manipulation.

27198 – with manipulation, requiring more than local anesthesia (i.e., general anesthesia, moderate sedation, spinal/epidural).

Anterior only pelvic ring fracture(s) should be reported with the appropriate E&M code.

In addition, the global period for the new codes is 0 days. The previous codes had a global period of 90 days.  This change was due to the fact it is performed in the office 25% of the time.
